SKATER PUTS SKATEBOARDER GRINDS, SLIDES
ON MOBILE DEVICE GAMING APP
CHALLENGE

Skater was the first and only console quality skating game available for iPhone and iPod Touch when it launched that met the demand of true skateboarders.   A unique offering, Skate was the touch-based app that allowed skateboarders to “skate” iconic street spots on their mobile devices. Players controlled their board and shoes in a very direct way that resembled skateboarding in real life and included a full range of tricks including grinds, slides, flip tricks, manuals, grinds and slides.

As Skater’s official public relations agency, Master Plan Communications (MPC), a leader in action sports PR, knew that it would have some challenges to achieve the client’s goals —  to reach both avid skaters and casual gamers who would appreciate the app’s details and all of its gaming features.

SOLUTION

MPC created a plan that would help execute the launch and would be flexible enough to navigate the challenges that would come along the way.  The team worked through bugs with the application and put a lot of strategic positioning around securing an iconic skateboard personality that would help validate the application. This was a key element to the execution of the program as MPC team knew that the skate community would not receive the game if it didn’t authentically resonate with users.

RESULTS

The MPC team secured renowned skateboarder Andrew Reynolds to validate the game and help with additional pitching angles within the core media for lifestyle and street culture audiences.
